Devuan is a fork[4][5][6] of the Debian GNU/Linux distribution that started in November 2014. Its stated first goal was to provide a distribution without the systemd init daemon installed by default.[7] The project's name is a portmanteau of Debian and VUA (Veteran UNIX Admins)[8] who originally discussed a systemd-free fork of Debian.[9]

History

The Debian 8 Jessie release had caused polarization among some Debian developers and users, due to the project's adoption of systemd as the default init.[10][11] The first stable release of Devuan was published on May 25, 2017.[12][13][14]

Devuan has its own package repository which mirrors upstream Debian development,[15] with local modifications made only when needed to allow for other init systems rather than systemd. Modified packages include policykit and udisks. Devuan is supposed to work very similarly to the corresponding Debian release. Devuan does not provide systemd in its repositories but still retains libsystemd0 until it has removed all dependencies on it.

Instead of continuing the Debian practice of using Toy Story character names as release codenames,[16] Devuan aliases its releases using planet names. The first stable release shared the Debian 8 codename Jessie. However, the Devuan release was named for minor planet 10464. The second stable release is named ASCII for minor planet 3568, while the permanent alias for the Devuan unstable branch is Ceres, named for the dwarf planet.[17]

Devuan 2.0.0 ASCII was released on June 9, 2018.[1][2]
