Hongmeng OS (simplified Chinese: 鸿蒙OS; traditional Chinese: 鴻蒙; pinyin: Hóngméng OS), is an operating system under development by Huawei since 2012 towards their future products.[1][2] To date and despite speculation, the company has not yet publicly designated an official name on the release of the operating system.[1]Cite error: The opening <ref> tag is malformed or has a bad name

The operating system has been originally announced as a replacement for Android (in response to financial sanctions imposed on Huawei by the United States government in 2019),[3] but by July 2019, Huawei executives had begun to describe HongMeng as being an "industrial" embedded operating system designed for Internet of things (IoT) hardware, discarding the previous statements for it to be a smartphone mobile operating system.[4]

History

In a published newspaper interview with Die Welt, Huawei executive Richard Yu stated that such an Operating System (OS) could be used as a Plan B if it were prevented from using Android or Windows as the result of U.S. restrictions, but that he would "prefer to work with the ecosystems of Google and Microsoft".[5][6][7] Huawei, since June 2019, has been treating EMUI as an operating system, sparking rumours about Hongmeng OS' final naming.[8] Some media outlets claim Hongmeng OS could be released in China in either August or September 2019 with a worldwide release in the second quarter of 2020.[9][10][8][11][12][13][14]

It is not known whether or not Hongmeng OS will be based on AOSP.Cite error: The opening <ref> tag is malformed or has a bad name However, international trade lawyer Kevin Wolf explained that Huawei would not be allowed to use AOSP, since a considerable part of AOSP is made by Google, which is a US company, and thus, AOSP is subject to US trade regulations.[15]

In July 2019, chairman Liang Hua stated that the OS was intended for "industrial" use and that Huawei "[had not] decided yet if the Hongmeng OS can be developed as a smartphone operating system in the future".[16] Building upon the statement, Huawei's senior vice president Catherine Chen stated that Hongmeng OS was an embedded operating system designed for Internet of things (IoT) hardware.[17][4]

Brand naming

On 24 May 2019, Huawei registered "Hongmeng OS" as a trademark in China for active validity until 13 May 2029.[18][19][20]

The same day, Huawei registered trademarks surrounding "Ark OS" and variants with the European Union Intellectual Property Office.[21]

It has been reported that Hongmeng OS will be called as such in China while being called Ark OS elsewhere. Some media outlets have reported the version outside China will be called Oak OS, but it is possibly a mispronunciation of Ark OS as Huawei has registered the trademark as Ark OS.[22][23][24][25] In July 2019, it was reported that Huawei had also registered trademarks surrounding the word "Harmony" for desktop and mobile operating system software (indicating either a different name or a component of the OS).[26]

Android Green Alliance

Android Green Alliance is the Chinese counterpart to Open Handset Alliance, composed of Alibaba, Baidu, Tencent, NetEase, and led by Huawei.[27] It sets development standards for Android apps in China.[28]
