Threader is a third-party client on iOS and Web dedicated to Twitter threads or Tweetstorm, developed by Vincent Denise and Marie Denis. Threader offers a distraction-and-ad-free experience by transforming these series of tweets into an article format. The application was created to highlight the most popular long-form content on Twitter. The service was acquired by Twitter in November 2021[1].

History

In 2017, Denise and Denis came up with the idea of curating the most popular Twitter threads after noticing that more and more authors were working around the 280 characters limit to express longer thoughts on the platform. The service started to see a gain of popularity after Chris Messina (open-source advocate) hunted the app on Product Hunt[2] and Apple featured Threader as an App of the Day[3].

The company was bootstrapped from day one[4] and offered a premium offer to access paid features like unlimited bookmarks, author subscriptions, PDF exports, and email daily digest. Part of the app remained free and not ad-monetized.

At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Twitter threads became an important medium to share critical information from scientists and epidemiologists[5]. Threader’s main feature to turn Twitter threads into a single page format was widely used to share conversations in a more readable format on other social media platforms.

Threader was acquired by Twitter in November 2021[6] and integrated as part of Twitter Blue[7], their new subscription offer.
