Android "Q" is the upcoming tenth major release and the 17th version of the Android mobile operating system. The final release of Android Q is scheduled for release in the third quarter of 2019.[2]

History

On March 13, 2019, Google released the first beta of Android Q exclusively on their Pixel phones, including the first generation Pixel and Pixel XL devices where support was extended due to popular demand.[3] A total of six beta or release-candidate versions are planned for release before the final release, which is currently scheduled for the third quarter of 2019.[2][4]

On May 7, 2019, Beta 3 launched and expanded the beta to 14 partner devices from 11 OEMs, twice as many devices compared to Android Pie's beta.[5] The Beta version's access to Huawei Mate 20 Pro was removed on May 21, 2019 due to U.S. government sanctions,[6] but the access was back on May 31.[7]

On June 5, 2019, Google released Beta 4 with the finalized Android Q APIs and SDK (API Level 29).[8] Dynamic System Updates (DSU) are also included in Beta 4. The Dynamic System Update will allow Android Q devices to temporarily install a GSI (Generic System Image) to try a newer version of Android on top of their current Android version. Once users decide to end testing the chosen GSI image, they can simply reboot their device and boot back into their normal device's Android version.[9]

On July 10, 2019, Google released Beta 5 with the final API 29 SDK as well as the latest optimizations and bug fixes.[10] This is the release candidate for testing.[11]

Features

Android Q features include:[3]

  • Native support for foldable phones[5][12][13]
