NGC 3940 is an elliptical galaxy, located 300 million light-years away[2] in the Leo constellation. It was discovered on April 26, 1785, by astronomer William Herschel.[3] NGC 3940 is a member of the NGC 3937 Group.[4][5]

NGC 3940 has a supermassive black hole with an estimated mass of 5 × 108 M.[6]
