Short description: Wikipedia key to pronunciation
This is the pronunciation key for IPA transcriptions of Punjabi on Wikipedia. It provides a set of symbols to represent the pronunciation of Punjabi in Wikipedia articles, and example words that illustrate the sounds that correspond to them. Integrity must be maintained between the key and the transcriptions that link here; do not change any symbol or its value without establishing consensus on the talk page first. |
The charts below show the way (both in Gurmukhi and Shahmukhi scripts) in which the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) represents Punjabi and Dogri pronunciations in Wikipedia articles. For a guide to adding IPA characters to Wikipedia articles, see {{IPA-pa}} and Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Pronunciation § Entering IPA characters.

Notes
- ↑ Consonants can be germinated (doubled)
- ↑ As Punjabi is a tonal language, some aspirated letters are not pronounced such as ‘ਭ’/‘بھ’ (bʰ)
- ↑ (Lām with small Tah - لؕ)
- ↑ /ɾ/ may be either tapped [ɾ] or trilled [r] depending on the speaker and variety.
- ↑ 5.0 5.1 5.2 5.3 /iː, ɪ/ and /uː, ʊ/ are neutralized to [i, u] at the end of a word.
- ↑ Example Portuguese: São Paulo
- ↑ In any word, there is a choice of three tones: high-falling (ì), low-rising (í), and level (i)
